Stress is a constant factor in everyone's life. We all experience some degree of stress, and a certain amount of positive pressure can often help improve performance and productivity. However, excessive levels or prolonged periods of stress can have adverse effects on both physical and mental health and well-being.

When you’re under stress, your body produces what is known as the stress response. Your system detects the presence of stress, and your body prepares to produce more energy to handle the stressful event. Unfortunately, your body can’t differentiate between positive stress and negative stress; it is only concerned with whether or not it will be able to handle the stress.

The key is to understand the impact that stress has on your body and your emotional state. If stress is allowed to build up over time with no release you can experience a state of overstress which will have serious negative effects on your body’s ability to function. Excessive stress robs the body of nutrients, energy and can affect your immune and cardiovascular health.

Long periods of stress can also impair your daily functioning and make even the simplest of life’s responsibilities difficult to cope with. Both physical and mental fatigue are the first signs that the body is being placed under unhealthy stress. The adrenal glands are the antistress glands of the body, and with continued stress can become exhausted. This can leave one feeling fatigued, run down, mentally foggy and forgetful, and generally feel overwhelmed with the daily tasks.

Causes of stress can be vast, ranging from physical stressors such as illness or injury, inadequate diet high in refined foods, additives, over consumption of alcohol and coffee, mental stress such as relationship issues, study, and financial burden plus job pressures. All of these have an impact on the body.

Taking simple steps toward living a healthy, balanced lifestyle can help reduce stress levels. A nutritious diet, along with stress reduction techniques, moderate exercise and nutritional supplements can all help to support and nourish the health of our body and mind.

There are a variety of herbs, vitamins and minerals that help support the body and mind.

Ingredients such as 5-HTP, Rehmannia, Liquorice, Ginseng, Rose Root, B Complex Vitamins all work to support the body’s response to stress, boost energy levels and support adrenal health. Let’s take a look at a few of these ingredients.

5-HTP supports healthy production of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is produced and stored in the brain and when released creates a feeling of well-being, supporting good mood. Healthy levels of 5-HTP are essential for healthy sleep patterns as well as calming and soothing the nervous system.

Vitamin B Complex - the B group Vitamins are often depleted by stress and these vitamins are important for ensuring that the nervous system is able to function effectively. B Vitamins will also support healthy energy levels, which can often be low during these times.

L-Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that helps balance mood and supports a healthy nervous system. Essential for healthy adrenal gland function and supporting mental clarity and focus.

Withania, Siberian Ginseng, Rose Root are all what we call, adaptogen herbs. Adaptogens support the body’s resistance to emotional and physical stressors, and help the body achieve emotional balance. Knowledge of special tonic herbs to fortify health and promote longevity dates back thousands of years to ancient China and India. The herbs help restore balance and strengthen the functioning of the body without throwing another organ or body system out of balance. Adaptogens help increase energy and endurance, support sexual vitality, calm the mind, support mental function and help the body restore balance following mental or physical stress.

Rehmannia, Liquorice also act as adaptogens, increasing the body’s resistance to stress. These two herbs also act to support the function of the adrenal glands and are highly recommended by Health Practitioners to support balanced adrenal function and related symptoms. Both Liquorice and Rehmannia are used extensively in Chinese medicine to support the health of the adrenals.

Magnesium in the body is depleted by stress.  Magnesium is an important mineral that helps to calm the body and mind and also helping to ease muscle tension.

St Johns Wort is primarily used to provide positive support for those with fluctuating moods caused by everyday stress. St Johns Wort is a well known herb for supporting healthy mood function, and a positive emotional balance.

Passionflower  is a calming herb and is most commonly used for its ability to calm and soothe the central nervous system.

Vitamin C provides antioxidant support and supports a healthy immune system. Ongoing stress can leave a person with no reserves and a greater susceptibility to illness. When the health of the immune system is supported, the body is better able to handle stress and  maintain resistance.
